Madhav Nepal Elected Chairman of Constitutional Committee

CPN-UML leader Madhav Kumar Nepal was today elected as the chairman of Constitutional Committee in the Constituent Assembly. Nepal defeated Bishwendra Paswan of the Dalit Janajati Party. UML's Ramanath Dhakal was also elected as the chairman of the State Affairs Committee after Maoist candidate Top Bahadur Rayamajhi withdrew from the contest. MJF candidate Pramod Gupta was elelected chairman of the Public Opinion Committee defeating Janak Kumari Chalise.

Chairpersons of 14 committees under the Constituent Assembly and another nine parliamentary committed were elected on Tuesday.

In the elections held at the CA hall Tuesday morning, only eight of the 63-member panel voted against Nepal while five abstained from voting.

Nepal defeated his rival Bishbendra Paswan of Dalit Janajati Party who represented the fringe parties in the CA.

After being elected Nepal said it is both challenge and opportunity for him to lead the committee. Hinting at the failure of the parties for consensus candidate, Nepal said it would be daunting job for him to consolidate the diverse opinion of the parties while writing constitution and expressed commitments to complete the constitution writing process within the stipulated timeframe.

Simalarly, Madheshi Janadhikar Forum (MJF) candidate Pramod Prasad Gupta has been elected the chairperson of the Public Opinion Collection and Coordination Committee under the CA, defeating CPN-ML candidate Janak Kumari Chalise. Chalise got only single vote.

Under Parliamentary committees elections, Maoist candidate Yashoda Gurung has been elected as the chair of Legislative Committee defeating Sarita Giri of Nepal Sadbhawana Party.

UML candidate Ramnath Dhakal has been declared as the chair of State Affairs Committee of the Legislative-Parliament after Maoist candidate Top Bahadur Rayamajhi withdrew his candidacy.

Chairman of the Constituent Assembly Subas Nemwang administered oath of office to all elected chairpersons of the 14 CA committees and nine parliamentary committees today. They are entitled to perks and position at part with state ministers.
