Long Term strategy needed on Milk farming and Dairy Sector
I have ever been wondering why Mr. Sharad Pawar had to make statement about shortage in Milk supply and likely increase in costs of Dairy products. I think he was right after I had the opportunity to have a look at the data of Milk Production in the country. But I fail to understand that why no analysis was made by the Ministry of Food and Civil Supplies as to why and so suddenly the situation has become so grim warranting a statement from the Minister.

If one gets an access to the examination of fact then it is worth while to observe that where UP is producing almost 18,861(Figures in 000 tonnes), Rajasthan-9,536, Punjab-9,282 and Andhra Pradesh-8,925 (All India production figures are 104,840) during the Yr. 2007-2008 and ever since these data’s are improving then why this emergent situation at all?
To my mind there are n-numbers of factor contributing this so called shortage. Of late, it has been observed that with the rise of middle income group the consumption pattern is changing. Now milk and other dairy products are becoming need of the middle income group families. On the dining table milk and the dairy products find space which was not the case till a few years back. Also, lot of informal processing of milk is being done privately and the by products find the market as lucrative in prices. Thus these activities are paving way for alternate route of milk in the market driven economy.
It is anticipated the some sort of emergency planning if not resorted to then the milk would be selling some where in the range of Rs.40/ Liter in coming summer season. Also, there is urgent need for having the relook on our cattle farming and live stock accounting. It would do lot of good the States like UP, Haryana, Punjab and Rajasthan launch urgent programme for increasing the milk supply and provide assistance to the farmers engaged in this sector. There is urgent need to look at the support that the farming community would be looking at.
In the name of shortage, Govt. is well advised to keep track of illegal practices that will be galore for supply of adulterated milk made of paint, urea etc. District Administration of all UP districts and specially that of NCR region would be expected to keep vigil on their agenda.
