Michael Leighton stopped 21 shots and the Carolina Hurricanes won for the first time in four preseason games with a 1-0 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers on Sunday.

Leighton, who’s expected to be Carolina’s No. 2 goalie, made nine saves in the third period. He has stopped 36 of 37 shots in two preseason outings.

Carolina’s Sergei Samsonov scored a first-period goal against Jean-Sebastien Aubin, set up on a pass from Patrick Eaves.

Aubin played the first 32:04, stopping 18 of 19 shots before Scott Munroe replaced him in the Philadelphia net.

Carolina center Matt Cullen was held out of the final two periods for was what described as precautionary reasons. He absorbed a hit from Philadelphia’s Nathan Guenin in the first period.

Hurricanes center Eric Staal played for the first time in the preseason. He had seven of the team’s 21 shots on goal through two periods and finished with eight shots.

Philadelphia’s lineup didn’t include captain Mike Richards or wingers Scottie Upshall, Scott Hartnell, Mike Knuble and Simon Gagne.
