It is well-known that foreign maids in Lebanon are horrifically abused. This systematic mistreatment often renders life so intolerable for maids that they either flee or commit suicide. Maids in Lebanon, whom mostly come from Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Ethiopia, are denied any labor rights and protections. Their passports are often confiscated, pay is often delayed to prohibit fleeing, they are often beaten with impunity and they are often made to feel less than human. Many Lebanese households often make their maids sleep outside in the balcony while their pets remain inside. Dozens of maids have often jumped from those balconies in desperation. All this and the state is oblivious.
The reason maids are so freely and atrociously mistreated by their employers is due to the culture of racism that inflicts Lebanese vulgar nationalism. This is a nation that worships the "White Man" and feels an inferiority complex toward Westerns. This is why many Lebanese like to pretend that they're "Phoenician" (as if that makes them white) or that they're "misplaced Europeans". While exalting the "White Man" all other people of darker skin are viewed as sub-human.
Maids are simply denied pretense of rights. And this vulgarity and racism sometimes reaches the most disgusting levels. It has been reported in the press that on their days off, many dark skinned maids have been denied entrance to private pools and beaches in Lebanon simply due to their skin color:

What exactly does it mean to be "miscellaneous" and what else falls in that category? Is one just not worthy of humanity and just an added thing less than human?
