A lawyer for a South Carolina teen accused of plotting to blow up his high school says the 18-year-old’s journal should be kept private.
Authorities have said Ryan Schallenberger’s journal described plans to attack Chesterfield High School.
On Friday, defense attorney Michael Meetz filed a motion to stop prosecutors from making it public. That would happen if the journal is introduced in court as prosecutors seek a long-term mental health evaluation for the teen.
Meetz says a psychiatrist who met with his client this week found the teen to be mentally competent to stand trial. He argues the journal is a private document and making it public would hurt his client’s chance for a fair trial.
Acting U.S. Attorney Kevin McDonald had not seen the motion and declined to comment.
