The Delhi Traffic Police is once again trying to introduce some semblance of discipline in the road traffic of Delhi. The earlier efforts have frittered away in some way or the other after half-hearted attempts at implementing lane driving.
However, this time the traffic police seems determined to implement lane driving. After issuing warnings to erring drivers for a month, the traffic police have started penalizing traffic violators to fall in line with lane driving.
To begin with, the Delhi Traffic Police has identified 15 stretches of major roads in Delhi which are wide enough to accommodate three lanes to implement this. The first lane on the extreme left is meant for buses, trucks and heavy vehicles. The second lane in the middle is meant for two wheelers and auto rickshaws. The third lane on the extreme right is meant for cars and other fast moving traffic with a speed up to 60 km per hour.
Driving in Delhi has always been a nightmare. Road rage cases have planted further fear in the minds of Delhi drivers. Sometimes, you feel that Delhi roads represent madness unleashed.
For me driving my car has always been a cautious exercise. I am convinced that safe drivers who follow traffic rules to the hilt do not meet with accidents because of their own faults but because of the faults of other drivers.
I am fearful of drivers who zoom and snake through heavy traffic with scant regard for traffic rules and lanes. To me lane driving is sane driving. Let us hope that the traffic regulations that the Delhi Traffic Police is trying to implement meets with success and makes Delhi roads safer to drive in.
