Lal Masjid Bomb Blast

Today was the one year anniversary of the Lal Masjid Seige in Islamabad and religious students and religious political parties had organized a big rally in support of the radical cleric being held by the government. Lal Masjid was one of the major incidents in bringing the popularity of General Musharraf down when the army took action against renegade Clerics and students to take control of the mosque in a military action killing scores of people in the action.

Today while observing the anniversary of the military action clerics and students condemned the actions of the government and demanded the release of the controversial cleric that headed the institute, they also demanded the reestablishment of the womens wing at the mosque which was destroyed in the action.

News is just coming in that while the organized convention was coming to an end, a huge bomb blast ripped through one of the most secure areas in Pakistan near the Lal Masjid, killing at least 12 people most of them policemen and injuring another 40 people, The area has been cordoned off by the Capitol City police and investigations are underway. Emergency services are responding and injured are being shifted to area hospitals, a state of high alert is in place all over Islamabad.
