Pakistan really seems to be opening up. No, I’m not talking about the election or the recent spurt of pubs in Lahore, but the fact that for the first time the Pakistani film KHUDA KE LIYE is going to be released in Indian cinema halls and multiplexes. The movie is a very sensitive one, depicting the emotional trauma that Muslims went through after the catastrophic 9/11 happenings, and has already been declared a huge hit in Pakistan. In fact, it has been very well received by Pakistanis all over the globe, except the conservative and dogmatic clerics of the country, who have relentlessly criticized the movie. The story revolves round two brothers with one settled in the US, and the other being mislead by fundamentalists, and depicts the somber issues that seem to be bothering all enlightened and moderate Muslims across the world; that of striking a balance of Muslim values with Western enlightenment.
The main protagonists of KHUDA KE LIYE are leading Pakistani actors Shaan and Imaan Ali, and versatile Indian actor Naseeruddin Shah also plays a key role of a Muslim clergyman. This low budget film has already won accolades globally for its depiction of Islamic values in the right perspective, and was critically applauded at the International Film Festival in Goa last year. The movie is supposed to hit Indian theaters from March 28th, and lets all hope that the name of the movie (which means In The Name Of God) lives up to the expectations and finally manages to break the ice between these two sub continents that are always loggerheads at each other.
