Karzai Agrees with the Proposal and Puts off the Inauguration Ceremony of the Parliament
President Karzai of Afghanistan who was due to inaugurate the first session of the newly elected Afghan lower house of the parliament “Wolasi Jirga” on the 23rd of this month, has agreed with a proposal put on his desk by the Chief of the Special Court set up a month ago to look into the affairs of misconduct, irregularities and widespread fraud in the elections of September 2010 that brought a majority of non-pushtoons to the Parliament, an act unparallel and unmatched in the modern history of Afghanistan as Afghanistan went through a lengthy period of transition from a totalitarian Kingdom to communism, to fundamentalist Muslim state to a modern democratic set up.

Just yesterday did Siddiqullah Haqiqi, Chief of the Special Court, say that for the purpose of addressing the issue of complaints regarding the massive fraud in the process, has requested the president to put off the Inauguration ceremony of the Parliament at least for a month.
The news has enlightened some who couldn’t make it into the new parliament and kept on with weeks of protests in the streets of Kabul. However, it wasn’t welcome at all corners. The new parliamentarians have condemned the new decision and have warned of entering the house on their own and if intercepted by the security forces, they would hold their sessions at another site.
The Afghan Independent Election Commission still holds that its decisions are unchallengeable in any court of law and that the results announced last month are reliable and unchangeable. This has in itself put the President at odds with the incoming parliament, thus, more tussles could be expected once the parliament in effect kicks off its proceedings.
