A federal judge says a doctor being extradited to Australia on manslaughter charges can’t go free in the United States for the next few weeks.

But U.S. Magistrate Judge Dennis Hubel (HYOO’-bul) said Friday that if the U.S. and Australian governments can’t get Dr. Jayant (JEYE’-ant) Patel extradited by July 21, he will gain some limited freedom _ including the right to attend religious services.

Patel is charged with making mistakes that caused patients to die in Australia. He has agreed to be extradited.

He will be allowed out of jail to see doctors and only if accompanied by federal officers.
