Johny Mera Naam!

LIFESTYLE. .

I have known the Anand brothers pretty closely.Followed their films and career too.

Personally Dev is a favourite, he began his career in Pune, so did I and believe you me, we were, at one point of time mutual fans.He loved my writing, and I his zest for life, which I still admire. (Here I must submit that I have mimicked his dress, walking style and even voice, and while he may have forgotten Johny Mera Naam's dialogs I can still rattle them off !)

Chetan Anand was the most suave of them, but never liked , understood and frankly cared for any of his films.

On the other hand, Goldie, or Vijay Anand was brilliant.Guide, Jewel Thief, Johny Mera Naam, Tere Mere Sapne, the flicks he magically created made Navketan , Dev saab's banner, and one was eagerly awaiting his swan song, Jaana na Dil Se Door when he suddenly passed away. Bhagwan Rajneesh happened to him so did a controversial marriage to his niece, but the guy was brilliant.

It saddened me to see Dev Saab loose himself after he began to wield the megaphone.

Prem Pujari was the start of the down slide, and except for Hare Rama Hare Krishna he never redeemed himself, save a sterling performance he got from Amjad Khan in Des Pardes.

Dev also let loose actors of the ilk of Shatrughana Sinha and Jackie Shroff on Indian cinema besides the iconic actress Zeenat Aman, so while credits are due to him for launches,no kudos for his cinematic shenanigans.

Those who studied the Anand brothers and knew them closely will always band together and say , Chetan should have stuck to his muse and literary pursuits, Vijay should have been the perennial technician in all fields, and Dev to being the poster boy!

Couldn't agree more, and perhaps this piece may anger Dev Saab a wee bit,let me say that I am willing to take it on !

For I still remember with fondness that I was the only journalist who got an exclusive interview with Dev Saab's original girl, Suraiya after forty years, where she admitted, "I regret not marrying Dev Anand"

To which Dev saab told me, " I was very much in love with her!"

This piece comes after three nights of seeing Jewel Thief,Johny Mera Naam and Prem Pujari one by one.
