Israeli Rabbi: 'Gentile sperm leads to barbaric offspring'

Why do Israeli religious obscurantism and intolerance not receive attention in the United States?

It seems that ever utterance of a fanatical Muslim kook receives mainstream coverage in America, no matter how fringe and un-influential the individual is. Often the Muslim fundamentalists which are cause for histrionic media clippings are not known by Muslims.

But in Israel genuinely prominent rabbis who carry influence make the most heinous and bigoted comments but are treated either with whitewashing or not given profiles in the pro-Israel U.S. press. The head rabbi of the ultra-Orthodox Shas party, which sits in the current right-wing Israeli cabinet, is notorious for his fanatical decrees. Amongst his most recent rabbinical dictate: non-Jews exist solely to serve Jews. Here's an influential rabbi who is the spiritual leader of a governing religious faction in Israel, whose remit includes the interior ministry and one out of the four deputy prime ministers, vomiting hateful trash and no word from the U.S. press. I will state that even in increasingly religious, xenophobic and militant Israel this rabbi is not mainstream. But nor is he fringe and or be easily dismissed either. In the last election Shas won 11 seats in the Israeli Knesset, just one less than the mainstream left-of-center Labor party and is a vital group in the ruling coalition. But would you imagine if even a Muslim cleric living a hermit's life in the Arabian desert would state that Islam dictates that non-Muslims exist solely in servitude for Muslims the same way Shas' rabbi reads the Torah that this would not be seized upon by the American press?

Recently the Israeli supreme court upheld sex-segregated buses in Israel on the grounds that they are permissible provided it is a voluntary segregation. The buses are managed by the ultra-Orthodox who believe men and women should not mix in a cramped bus. A lawsuit was brought by an Israeli feminist group. The high court ruling that bus segregation is illegal if mandatory but acceptable if voluntary is a sham. Imagine if the U.S. Supreme Court issued a similar half-hearted ruling in support of voluntary racial segregation. The obvious retort here is that voluntary will be anything but because women will be pressured by religious men to move to the back of the bus. For all intents and purposes the practice will remain just as racial segregation would have been enforced by intimidation if it were not for an unequivocal ruling decrying it. But now in Israel it has received de facto court blessing as the nation continues to slide toward increasing power exercised by the Orthodox.

And, lastly, there's this gem:

Rabbi Dov Lior, a senior authority on Jewish law in the Religious Zionism movement, asserted recently that a Jewish woman should never get pregnant using sperm donated by a non-Jewish man – even if it is the last option available.

According to Lior, a baby born through such an insemination will have the "negative genetic traits that characterize non-Jews." Instead, he advised sterile couples to adopt.

"Sefer HaChinuch (a book of Jewish law) states that the character traits of the father pass on to the son," he said in the lecture. "If the father in not Jewish, what character traits could he have? Traits of cruelty, of barbarism! These are not traits that characterize the people of Israel."

So non-Jews have innate negative characteristics that led to barbaric offspring? How ironic for a rabbi to issue such trash when Jews themselves have long suffered from similar attacks. But it is okay for Jews to also engage in such behavior in their corner of the world? Apparently the U.S. media is non bothered by such Jewish-supremacist garbage spewed while citing Jewish law by a prominent Israeli rabbi.

Imagine if a Muslim said the same thing?!
