Israel Lobby Rejoices At Republican Victory

POLITICS. .

I wrote this script already, but no chocolates for me since it is so predictable.

I have noted that the Israeli right-wing was eagerly awaiting the midterm election results and particularly, naturally, Israeli prime minister Benyamin “Bibi” Netanyahu. The Israeli primer is truly embedded in American politics and does not hesitate to show his arrogance and partisanship in that regard.

And perhaps he cannot be faulted for “Bibi” has spent nearly half his life in the United States. And in his years in America “Bibi” networked quiet effectively with the pro-Israel community and till this day relies on them - who constitute journalists, academics, political operatives and “think tank” residents - to defend his position in Washington. In other words: “Bibi” coming to America is somewhat returning home and he has many friends at home. This feeds his arrogance and it also gives him an astute sense of American politics.

Most foreign leaders who not play partisan politics with a nation for their own benefit. They would not go over the president of the United States and instead seek, as a foreign leader no less, to rally support on his behalf in the legislative body against the sitting president all in the name of a foreign leader. It is an incredibly impertinent move worthy only of a vandal. But that is “Bibi”. And this is a man who believes that his allies in the U.S. (i.e. Israel lobby) will provide him with cover to treat the United States as his floor mat. This is a man once recorded on Israeli television as saying: “I know what America is. America is a thing you can move very easily, move it in the right direction. They won’t get in their way.”

His arrogance is such that after his first meeting with President Clinton in 1996, the U.S. president stated to his aides afterwords in regards to ‘Bibi’: “Who the f*** does he think he is? Who’s the f***ing superpower here?”

Clinton also attacked ‘Bibi’ as a ’son of a bitch’ who does not want peace. For ‘Bibi’ it is part arrogance and immaturity. And “Bibi” demonstrated contempt for Clinton. During the Clinton trials when the president was politically weakened and at the same time applying strong pressure on Netanyahu to withdrew from the West Bank. “Bibi” instead visited Washington, went over Clinton and made his first appearance as a Republican rally and sought to use the GOP to block Clinton. Remember this insult against Clinton we shall soon be seeing it against Obama. As commentators and writers wrote prior to the Republican takeover of the House of Representatives and at least a +6 seat increase in the Senate:

Netanyahu is not “paralyzed,” merely waiting. For what? The American election result. If the Republicans win a convincing majority, he’ll give up all pretense of listening to Obama. If the Democrats hold on to a majority, he will continue the pretense with a degree more responsiveness, for a few months. By then, the posturing for 2012 will have begun, and the pressure of popular and bought opinion against Obama’s negotiations will increase. Since the president did so little when he had a majority and personal popularity to use as leverage, Netanyahu trusts he won’t do more when the majority is narrow or non-existent and popular opinion has swung against him.

And “Bibi’s” office itself admits that Netanyahu’s is playing his cards and waiting for election results to determine his ability to play American politics via-a-via Obama:

An official in Netanyahu’s office confirmed that Israel’s position is to continue seeking compromises through the U.S. midterm elections. He added, however, that Netanyahu’s administration is “eagerly awaiting” the results of the election.

An article in a leading Israeli daily newspaper, Yediot Ahronot, however, quoted “aides close to Netanyahu” saying that if Democrats fared poorly in the midterm elections, Netanyahu would be less likely to give into White House demands.

“Netanyahu hopes that he will succeed in repelling the American president’s initiative by means of friends of Israel in the House of Representatives, which is expected to have a Republican majority that is opposed to Obama.”

That Bibi. And that is exactly what is happening as Zionists feel emboldened:

One prominent pro-Israel lobbying group in Washington is already praising the GOP takeover of the House of Representatives as a net benefit for Israel.

"While Democrats are likely to keep control of the U.S. Senate, Republicans will take over the U.S. House of Representatives following Tuesday's elections. This is likely to have implications for Israel-related issues such as Israel's relationship with the United States and the push for sanctions against Iran," said an e-mail blasted out by The Israel Project only minutes after news stations called the turnover of House control a certainty.

"The takeover of the House by Republicans is great news for Israel and her supporters," the email quotes Ari Fleischer, White House spokesman under President George W. Bush, as saying. "The House leadership and almost every single GOP member is rock-solid behind Israel. At times like this, Israel needs friends everywhere."

Incidentally it is hilarious because the Democrats were no less supportive of Israel, as one Palestinian-American writer puts it: BREAKING NEWS: Benjamin Netanyahu retains control of U.S. Congress.

But the Democrats, unlike the Republicans who deeply hate Obama, were less likely to publicly buck Obama when it came to Israel and defy him and support Netanyahu instead.

Bibi and his zealots feel they have won and in the short-term they may be right. But in the long run, as more and more people grow fed up and disgusted with Israeli oppression, occupation and arrogance to boot, such arrogance and refusal to negotiate in good faith will only expedite the end of Israel.

An enemy shotting himself. Let him be. In the end he shall lose. They think they've, but in the end it will only conclude in defeat. There is no changing the tide. Israel's days are numbered and what we are seeing is the desperate last pleas of an embattled state which knows that it years do not bode well. But Israel has done a lot to undermine itself.

And to see an earlier date for the liberation of Palestine.
