Islamist Religious Extremism Follows Us Into 2011- 21 Egyptian Copts Dead
2010 was a year full of violence, and although some ragtag Greek and Italian anarchists managed to wreak havoc in their countries towards the latter part of the year, the bulk of the bloodshed or attempted bloodshed was perpetrated by Muslim extremists. In the final week of the year (from December 25th through December 31st) at least 25 attacks by Muslim extremists killed at least 128 people, and injured over 200. That we know of. Who knows how many other unreported incidents occurred throughout the year.

I had hoped that with the advent of a new year, we might see some of that violence left behind, but that doesn't seem very likely. On New Year's day, 2011, a suicide bomber blew up a Coptic Church in Egypt killing approximately 21 people, and injuring well over 70 people, ironically not all of them Christians. President Hosni Mubarak condemned the attack, but it seems that no-one else had any right to condemn it, at least according to the head Imam at Egypt's Al Azhar. Ahmed Al Tayeb criticized the Pope for 'interfering' in the internal affairs of the country when Benedict XVI suggested the leaders of Egypt do something about the unrelenting persecution of Christians there. Right, because they're just Christians and they deserve being discriminated against and bombed to bits.
Christians, other minority religions and even Muslims were targets of endless attacks last year. Christians in Iraq are being systematically run out of the country through intimidation and extermination. Nigerian Christians were massacred on Christmas Eve, one of the holiest of Christian religious holidays. Muslims (from all sects) killed each other in record numbers.
Islamist extremism seems to be surging out of control all over the world. Terrorists were thwarted throughout the year, but how much blood would have been shed had they not been caught?
If this is any indication of what's to come, 2011 is going to be every bit as bloody and violent as 2010.
