Iranian Cleric Believes Extra-Marital Affairs Cause Earthquakes
I've heard some interesting theories about the causes of natural disasters (which seem to be taking center stage these past few years), but the one by a senior Iranian cleric takes the cake for all its fruitiness. He seems to believe that the earthquakes in Iran are caused by- wait for this- extramarital affairs! Yes, all those many people having extramarital sex in the Islamic Republic of Iran are the cause of earthquakes. I assume he means it's the wrath of Allah and not the huge amounts of people going at it that are causing the earth to shift. And, of course, women are at the root of the problem, as they always seem to be. According to Ayatollah Kazem Singh Sedighi, all those nasty (my adjective) women dressed inappropriately (I assume burqa-less, since I'm sure he'd prefer that to the head scarf) are what inevitably lead to extramarital affairs.

He shared those pearls of wisdom with his flock (of men, I'd venture to say) during the April 16 Friday prayers.
"Many women who dress inappropriately ... cause youths to go astray, taint their chastity and incite extramarital sex in society, which increases earthquakes.""Calamities are the result of people's deeds...We have no way but conform to Islam to ward off dangers,"
If we're going to attribute metaphysical rather than scientific reasons for earthquakes I'd like to posit that all those earthquakes in Iran are, yes, the result of people's deeds, but not because of extramarital affairs, but rather the fact the country is run by a bunch of madmen who rule their nation with an iron fist, who torture and kill opponents, who want to destroy Israel and who knows what other countries, and let's add pathological liars for good measure. Yes, indeed, that seems a far more appropriate and logical reason. Although, he should be condemning extramarital affairs they certainly are not the cause of Iran's quakes.
I have to wonder if there are prerequisites for becoming a cleric. Can any 'Hakim the sheepherder' become an Ayatollah, or do they have to have some form of education? Because with comments like Sedighi's, one does wonder.
