Intentional Desertification (1)

During a joint meeting held by the committees in the House of parliament yesterday, the three Jordanian parliamentary committees “Health and Environment", "Agriculture and Water," and "Rural and Desert Areas" have asked to temporarily postpone the project of building a branch of the “Royal Military Academy Sandhurst” in Ajloun/Jordan, until more in-depth study of the project is conducted…

Reason for the committees’ appeal?

Obviously such a decision will cost Jordan around 2200 forest trees…

And if you do not have a clear picture of the status of environment in Jordan, here comes a quick summary:

In short: Jordan is a country that seriously suffers from desertification. It is a country where only 1% of its area is green. Climate change is practically “killing” Jordan… We Jordanians are having less rainy days, more dry ones. Less trees and less water mean more desertification, less food, poorer people, and less security. This all leads to more and more climate change and global warming. It is a vicious cycle that we are going through here. And then someone comes along and says we need to cut 2200 trees to construct yet more buildings: Killing living things to build non living ones.

I have a suggestion here:

I am all for benefiting from other countries’ various experiences, but then again, how about we leave the trees alone, and start working on improving our people’s basic educational level. We need to do this before we import foreign systems from other countries, ones that probably our average citizens will not be able to afford?

No matter how educated, hungry people make angry people…
