There are over 30 illegal Pakistani workers among the 300 something caught for similar reason in the United Kingdom (UK) as declared by a press statement quoted in news today.
The news tells that immigration authorities in UK have started a crackdown on illegal workers/residents in UK and a large number of arrests have been made lately of such people including Pakistani nationals. UK official Carol Doughty has made it clear that they are not singling out Pakistanis for arrest on account of their illegal status but people of any nationality wouldn’t be allowed to stay or work in UK illegally.
Those living and working in UK illegally are certainly bringing a bad name to Pakistan and are tarnishing the image of Pakistanis in the west. It is important for both UK and Pakistan to take serious notice of such abuse and closely monitor the activities of those who leave for UK. Many of these get to UK on a student visa and then keep extending their stay under various pretexts. So it will be important for UK to understand that students overstaying their visas should also be tracked and dealt with legally.
Pakistani authorities, on the other hand, need to cooperate with UK immigration department (and that in other countries) to stop the illegal stay of its nationals in these foreign counties. This will not only help correct the image of Pakistanis abroad but also establish Pakistan as a trusted land whose people will be welcome in the west.
