ICAI Elections - Isn't it strange to see so many practicing CAs begging for votes!!!
The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India is conducing elections on 4th and 5th Dec, 09 for Central Council and Western Council (That's what I know since I have got requests for votes for only these two councils!). I am actually bemused by the way all contestants have taken to the election campaign. Few have sent their personal bio- data to residential/office addresses, few have resorted to providing some insight in some or the other law/ act etc. along with their personal publicity material and some have resorted to Viral SMS campaigns.

Some creative minds have also asked their colleagues/clients/partners etc. to reach out their friends and relatives who are non- practicing and the part of industry; and seek their 1st preference/2nd preference/ 'whatever' preference vote. What is surprising is, this exactly works as political election! I have been getting requests for preference votes from candidates who have never bothered to reach out to me otherwise.
Being a member of the institute but not in practice, I am – and so would be many of my colleagues in industry – likely to have grievances on many aspects. But the candidates are interested only in my votes and not in my grievances. I don't know majority of them because they never cared earlier to make them available for me...I am sure lot of my colleagues would cast their vote based on the recommendations from their known friend/relative/etc. Is that the right way to get elected? Is that the right way to seek votes?
Time to change, ICAI!
