“Human in Khaki”
Emphasising on the need of pro-active people-oriented policing, Dr. Kiran Bedi today released the book - “Human in Khaki”, a hard-hitting book, which covers all contemporary issues that bedevil society today. Authored by Mr. Ashok Kumar (IPS) with Mr. Lokesh Ohri, the book urges the common man to know about his rights.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Ashok Kumar (IPS) said, “While the Book allows the public at large to ‘peep’ into the working of the police, and thus encourage and empower the man-on-street to ensure that he is served with greater perseverance, it also serves as a mirror to men in uniform and the public services about their own functioning”
‘Human in Khaki’ is a collection of select 16 short stories depicting over 20 years of real-life situations and anecdotes in Police Force, of an IIT-ian turned cop, who adopted a human approach to public service, trying to create a culture of people-friendly policing. “The book sets a precedent on how Police Officers have to uphold their human sensitivity while dealing with people and look at the problem from the victim’s point of view- then this very system will deliver the results ”, added Mr. Kumar.
“A good policeman must constantly quiz himself while taking decisions –
· Will my actions be good for the society?
· Will it help the person who is in right?
· Will it bring relief to the victim?
· Will it deter the wrongdoer?
If these answers echo positively in his heart, one can say a good policeman has justified his existence & purpose”, believes Mr. Kumar.
ABOUT THE BOOK
The gripping narrative, written in a simple and lucid style, brings out happenings from a distinguished career spanning over twenty years. The stories bring out the essence of pro-active, people-oriented and effective policing. With the background of real incidents, the stories bring out different facets of how outcomes could have been much worse had the officer not been sensitive and perceptive to the needs of the ordinary individuals approaching him without the usual crutches of wealth or influence.
Covering all contemporary issues bedevilling the society today: from terrorism to kidnapping, land grab to women’s molestation, incidents of harassment by SMSs to eve teasing, extortion to corruption, the widening gap between the haves and the have-nots and its impact on society, ‘Human in Khaki’ is an eye-opener for not just the masses but the police too. It talks candidly about the erosion of values in society today and the struggles of an individual to stand up for simple yet essential values that still hold this country together, despite its screaming contrasts and inequities.
While the book will serve as a mirror to men in uniform and the public services about their own functioning, it will also encourage the common man to ensure that he is served with greater efficiency. The book also will, the authors hope, ensure greater sensitivity from the people towards the policemen and vice-versa. The book’s appeal holds equally for the government officials who serve and the ordinary citizen who expects good governance.
The book, published by Bookworld, Dehradun comprising of 163 pages, is priced at Rs, 295/- and will be available on stands from today.
