American Liberal Zionism - Embracing Even Israeli Fascists.

One of the hallmarks of American liberals may be defined by the acronym: PEP, Progressive Expect Palestine.

American liberals are all for equality, peace and justice expect when it comes to Palestine and the Palestinians. American liberals like their causes to be soft and ones where there can be a bipartisan connection and where American may be portrayed as innocent. Such as the Free Tibet or Save Darfur movements. The United States is not a guilty party (nobody wants to blame America, now), Republicans and Democrats can agree and the causes are uncontroversial. It is nice to have a safe cause.

Palestine, on the other hand, is simply toxic in the United States. There has been such a passce of the state of Israel that all manners of professed liberal values are left at the checkpoint when it comes to Zionism. Liberals generally oppose war, but defend Israel's "right to self-defense" even though Israel is the brutal military occupier. They're all for equality and humanitarianism, but believe Palestinians are second-class people whose rights need to be submerged in order to accommodate Zionism's need to create a ethno-centric Jewish state which must invariable discriminate against all non-Jews as Israel of course does. They call for justice and self-determination for the people of Tibet, but most never say a word in support for Palestinian national rights even though the occupation of Palestine is 1) more brutal and savage and entails illegal settlements to steal more Palestinian land and 2) more long-standing than the occupation of Tibet, in fact Israel's occupation of 1967 Palestine is the longest military occupation in the modern world.

And this trend is best exhibited by those vapid Hollywood celebrities who think they are so enlightened. Take anti-war activist Susan Saradon. Saradon is almost hysterical when it comes to Bush, but she embraces an Israeli diamond merchant, Lev Leviev, whom funds illegal settlements that steal Palestinian land. This is a man whose illegal activity prohibited the British government from leasing office space in one of his Israeli buildings, but Saradon loves him and his collection of jewels.

Jane Fonda once entertained not only the Viet Cong, communists fighting against her country, but Israeli troops off the coast of Lebanon about the attack the country.

Or take the case of Madonna: Madonna’s love for Kabbalah (her fake idea of Kabbalah not the real mysticism) has inspired a love for Israel. But it is not that Madonna cares for Israel, it is that she just cares for Israel while the Israeli-occupation does not bear on her mind. This is a woman whom likes to present herself as pro-peace and a humanitarian. Whom adopts African children for that purpose. She spoke out against Bush and the Iraq war, and John McCain and Sarah Palin for that matter.

If she loves Israel fine, but to be in Israel and celebrate without showing even token concern for the Palestinian is a reflection only of a tribal-mentality at least on this issue. It is not only that. Madonna did not just go to Israel, and she did not just hang out with Israeli leftists but embraced the Israeli far-right:

“Madonna is reportedly spending the Sabbath eve at Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s home.”

There is no low for American liberals and Israel. I could comment some more, but the best comment I’ve read is by the Angry Arab and I’ll leave it to him:

Forget about the celebrity culture and forget about a person whose knowledge of world affairs is distracted by her constant search for poor African children to buy. But it made me think: that American Zionist liberals are not even like Israeli Zionist liberals. Israeli Zionist liberals are aware of the right-left dichotomy (as bad and criminal and terrorist the Israeli Zionist liberals and conservatives are), while American liberal Zionists identify with Israel so much that they disregard the right-left dichotomy. This is a woman who would never be seen with a right-wing American politician, but would be honored to dine with a fascist Israeli leader. Such are the standards of American Zionist liberals: Madonna mocks George W. Bush, and honors Netanyahu, who is to the right of Bush.

And now we can add Ashton Kutcher to this list of shameful American liberals whose love for Zionism is as such that they embrace even the most fanatical Israelis. The type of Israelis that self- identifying liberal Israelis who never met with and feel uncomfortable hanging out with, but American liberals feel so welcomed and honored to be in their presence:

I wonder if Ashton Kutcher knows what poor judgment he demonstrated yesterday. Both Nablus and Hebron are well within the occupied territories. For more than 40 years now, hundreds of thousands of Palestinians living in these cities have no political or civil rights, can’t travel, work or study freely, and are tried in Israeli military courts under British colonial laws. The area of the Tomb of the Patriarchs in Hebron is particularly nasty. Entire streets are forbidden to Palestinians, kept only for the use of a tiny and radical settlers’ community, which frequently harass and abuse the Arab residents.

Did anyone tell Ashton Kutcher that in 1994 a Jewish Terrorist named Baruch Goldstien (another resident of Jewish Hebron) opened fire on the Arabs praying there, killing 29 and wounding more than a hundred? Does Kutcher understand that coming to Hebron to pray with the Jewish community there is like riding into a black neighborhood in Alabama, 1950, with a KKK group? Does he realize that going to Nablus with an army hat is seen in the same way as going there on a Tank?

I don’t oppose the right of Jews to pray anywhere, just as I think Arabs should have this right (most of the Palestinian population is forbidden from entering their holy sites in Jerusalem), but context is everything, and right now the context in the West Bank is that of the occupation and the settlements.

If Ashton Kutcher wanted so badly to visit these holy places, he should have done it as a guest of the Palestinians. I’m sure they would have been happy to host him. But then he might have faced a different problem: the Israeli tendency to prevent foreigners from entering the occupied territories on the Palestinian’s invitation.

Apparently Kutcher didn’t only visit Hebron and Jushua’s grave near Nablus on Sunday, but also stopped yesterday at Gush Etzion (south of Bethlehem), were he received a guided tour on the history of Jewish settlements in the region and had lunch.

According to a report by Maariv [Hebrew], The visit was initiated and organized by the Israeli branch of the American Orthodox Union (OU). OU Israel, which receives funds for its activities from the municipality of Gush Etzion settlements [Hebrew], was credited for the photos Maariv and walla.co.il published from Kutcher’s visit to the settlements.

Journalist and culture critic Dafna Lustig, who called Kutcher “a jerk” on her twitter account following his West bank visit, wrote today on walla.co.il [Hebrew] that “Kutcher demonstrated one of the most blind, ignorant and insensitive acts a guest to Israel can do.”

If we assume Ashton Kutcher knew the story of the city of Hebron before the visit, then, like many others, he must believe that the occupation is legitimate and therefore does not have a problem taking this side side on the political map… [But if] Kutcher thinks Hebron is a legitimate tourist attraction just because he is not familiar with its history, than his visit is far more infuriating: we’re not in Beverly Hills and our problems won’t be concealed with the help of Botox. It’s the duty of every person, and certainly one who is so famous, to know where he is going (…) and if he doesn’t know and didn’t bother to find out, than I stand behind what I wrote on Twitter: he is simply a jerk.

I wonder if this talentless hack was amused by the stories the illegal settler scum told about how they attack and kill Palestinians and destroy their olive groves for sport, and how they intend to steal more Palestinian land. I bet Kutcher was thinking about doing a show where a Palestinian actually has his legal rights and his land respected only to be "punked" by Israeli illegal settlers and the occupation army who in the last scene come to arrest him and bulldoze his home and steal his land.

I mean, many Americans would find that funny. Liberals included.
