Higher Education Commission to be Devolved
The federal government has announced the devolution of the Higher Education Commission (HEC) and has stood by its decision despite some criticism and a few minor protests in some parts of the country. The authority of the commission will be now be transferred to the provincial governments of the country’s provinces.

The decision of devolving the HEC has been made in accordance with the 18th Amendment made to the constitution of Pakistan last year. Since last month, when the attempts to convince the government over letting the HEC retain its authority, and of course its budget, a number of people have written in support of the HEC in the print media as well as on blogs and social media. HEC’s ex-chairman Mr. Attaur Rehman even invited the military and judiciary to intervene in this situation and save the HEC from devolution.
Some students and heads of institutions of higher studies are also uneasy with the government’s decision over HEC’s devolution. Majority of the academia and students, however, seem indifferent to the decision.
On the whole, the government’s devolution plan for higher education can be hailed as a step toward development because it will do away with the dysfunctional aspects of the HEC and cut costs significantly by assign the education affairs to the care of already functional provincial administration.
