HAVE YOU MET GOD LATELY?

POLITICS. .

LORD CRICKETESHWARA

· A certain businessman facing hard times was traveling down a highway from Bangalore to Mysore. At one point he decided to rest by the side of a milestone. A ‘nimboo’[lime] fell out of his bag and rested at the bottom of the stone. Later that night he struck a lucrative business deal. Guess what he did next?He told all who cared to listen to him that that milestone was really a ‘ god’. That stone was ‘ consecrated’ as ‘Lord Highwayshwara’ and now has become a pilgrim spot for thousands of people who want ‘God’s blessings’ !![Reported in DECCAN CHRONICLE’ CHENNAI] .One place less for travellers to pee.

LORD CRICKETESHWARA

· I was traveling by an auto rickshaw down a street in Chennai. At one point the driver got excited and pointed out to me the house of a top film star. I told him that I was traveling precisely to that house to meet the star who is a nephew of mine and could he please make a U turn? The driver could hardly believe his eyes. He looked at me as if I were not an ordinary human being. Had I given even the faintest of indications he might have fallen at my feet to express his adoration of the star. He asked me a volley of questions—Is the star like him in any way , does he wear ordinary clothes at home, what does he eat etc. I told him that I was visiting the star because he was down with diarrhea. The driver looked totally deflated. ‘You mean to say he is really like me ?” he asked.

· ‘Let’s win the Cricket world cup for Sachin’ goes the cry these days .It was left to Kapil Dev and Steve Waugh to bring some sense into this delirious cry ‘Win the cup for India’ they reminded us.

Now my point is this—many of us are all too prone to quickly elevate our heroes into ‘gods’ and to ‘worship’ them .This idolization is the offshoot of a certain attitude of total hopelessness in our lives whereby almost nothing is seen as within our capability We depend on God for everything . Even the simplest of things are hard fought. Prodded by Hinduism the result is that when someone achieves success we elevate them to an exalted status.

I remember a description of a certain business magnate of yesteryears who was felicitated on his birthday. Hundreds of people—rich and successful—lined up to fall at his feet. On several occasions the great magnate did not even look at the person cringing for his blessings at his feet. The great man was seen talking on his mobile phone .A wag remarked that the cringing, prostrating person may not know that the magnate might even be talking to someone and plotting the downfall of the prostrated guy!!

.These ‘exalted people’ turn out to be ordinary mortals. Just see how Ratan Tata wrote that silly letter eulogizing A. Raja!

I am announcing a betting scheme. What are the odds that should Sachin score a century in the World cup finals and enable India to win the coveted cup there will be in Dadar a temple to Lord Cricketeshwara.?Statutory Warning: It has already been said that if cricket is religion then Sachin is God!
