Hard India Soft India
HARD INDIA VS SOFT INDIA
A relative of mine wrote to me about his intention to return to India for good from the US. He asked me for information on how India had developed in the last ten years that he and his family had been out of India, Since I myself had returned from the US after over 3 years I requested my friend Sekhar to prepare a ‘ report’ on some recent exciting developments in India that could impress my relatives.

Here are just 4 extracts from Sekhar’s lengthy report .What I did with this report will be discussed later.
[1] People in India are beginning to have the same access to gyms that Americans have .There are any number of gyms in cities here.
[2] Advanced medical procedures like stem cell treatment are now available in many clinics at least in cities.
[3] Top quality buses including VOLVO are now plying our streets.
[4] Working parents can now breathe easy like their American counterparts. Day care centres are now to be seen in most cities.
Now I have a nasty habit of cross verifying information that is presented to me .I tend to be research oriented. It so happened that I came across some news reports that suggested that all is not well in the very points that Sekhar talked about. Here are the reports I came across
[1] Most Gyms are supervised by trainers who are not qualified to guide you .Consequently more and more people who flock to these gyms are now suffering from the undesirable effects of poor training. Far from improving health these gyms are a health hazard. Clearly the purpose of setting up these gyms seems to be to make money any which way.
[2] Stem cell treatment advertised in most clinics is quite simply quackery and could harm the patient. Such hospitals are in fact injurious to your health. Clearly the purpose of setting up these clinics seems to be …….
[3] No doubt Volvo buses ply our roads but one lesson stands out starkly—you can import ultra modern buses but can you import driving skills and habits? Our drivers drive with scarcely any concern for lives of pedestrians and other people in other vehicles. Clearly bus drivers and owners seem to be in this business in order to …
[4] Day care centres are staffed by non qualified personnel. Safety features are almost non existent. The staff have no clue how to handle emergencies. . In short parents entrust their kids to the bulk of these day care centres at great risk . Clearly the purpose in setting up these day care centres seems to be …
An SMS I received summarized it all—in India a pizza will be delivered to your home in less than 25 minutes—without fail. But today’s news paper tells me that in a city road a man was hit by a speeding truck. The truck driver—as is the norm—sped away. Passers by rang up an ambulance service .An hour later the ambulance did not show up. Some people then took the badly injured man in a car to a hospital. The doctor looked at the patient, took his pulse and examined him carefully, then shook his head—‘You are half an hour too late’
To summarise we find it easy to import technology[hard aspect] but seem to find it impossible to imbibe the attitudes [soft aspect] that can make our country a superpower.
