Hakim Ali Zardarai Passes Away at 81
Hakim Ali Zardari, father of Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari, passed away on Tuesday, May 24, 2011, at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences in Islamabad. Aged 81, the late Zardari had been seriously ill and been kept alive on life support for some time.

Born in a family of landlords in Nawabshah, Sindh province, Hakim Zardari grew up to become a seasoned politician of the country. He started his political career in the mid 1960s, supporting Miss Fatima Jinnah in the presidential elections against President Ayub Khan, thus standing for democracy against military dictatorship. In 1970, he became a founding member of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), which is now headed by his son President Asif Ali Zardari, and later won elections a number of times from this pro-democracy party. He also served as a federal minister more than once.
Hakim Zardari was not only a seasoned politician but also an admirer of art. He encouraged establishment of cinema houses in Sindh and even produced a Sindhi film titled Soorath. Zardari did invaluable service in developing his native town of Nawabshah. It is said that people will always remember his contribution in developing Sindh province and strengthening democracy in the country.
Along with the Prime Minister, many prominent political figures have expressed condolence over Hakim Zardari’s death. The deceased will be laid to rest today.
