Miroslav Havel, for more than four decades the chief designer for Waterford Glass, has died at age 86.

Havel died at his home on Sept. 5 of heart failure, his family said.

He was born on May 26, 1922, at Drzkov in what is now the Czech Republic.

When Bernard Fitzpatrick and Karel Bacik revived the Waterford company after World War II, Bacik invited his fellow countryman Havel to join the staff.

Along with designing glass ware, Havel made crystal chandeliers for Westminster Abbey in London and the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.

He was particularly proud of a scale replica of the Statue of Liberty that Garret FitzGerald, then Ireland’s prime minister, presented to U.S. President Ronald Reagan on St. Patrick’s Day, 1986.

Havel is survived by his wife Betty, three sons and three daughters.
