German Man On Trial For Raping Or Assaulting 1,000 Women Over 22 Years

Rape is an horrendous act of violence. It is rarely about sexual gratification but rather about control and domination of the victim. It is one of the worst violations possible, and one that is committed all too often. Sexual predators and serial rapists are in a class of their own, and are quite often people you'd never suspect capable of such violence. They are often married with children, and you have to wonder how a wife could have absolutely no idea what her husband was doing. Especially when you hear about the case of a man in Germany who is on trial for having sexually assaulted and raped about 1,000 women, over a 22 year period. That's about 45 per year, or an average of 3 per month.

The man, 46-year-old Joerg P (German law does not allow the revealing of last names in court cases, was married with two children. He not only raped women in Germany, but in Belgium, Luxembourg and Holland, as well, including when he and his family were on vacation.

Even during a holiday with his wife and two children at Lake Constance, in southern Germany, prosecutors said he slipped away from his family to commit the crimes and rejoined them later as if nothing had happened.

His targets were intelligent women, who he wished to demean. He would approach women, often knocking on their doors feigning injury and asking to use their bathrooms. He apparently stole that idea from the movie "The Silence Of The Lambs".

The man, from Altenahr in the picturesque Rhineland region, admitted he had a burning hatred of 'intelligent women' and told a court in Dusseldorf that he had an insatiable need to degrade them.

He said: 'I wanted to avenge myself on intelligent women.'

The court heard how his poor reading and writing skills contributed to a personality disorder and the need to 'prove' himself sexually.

He was very methodical in his tactics and most of the rapes were obviously premeditated since he confessed in court that he would lay in wait for hours to assure the women were home alone.

Sexual predators are very sick individuals, and have no control over their urges even those that wish hey could control it.

'It caused me a lot of suffering but I could not help myself,' he told police when he was arrested in March after DNA evidence was sent from Belgium following a TV crime show.

He said he went to prostitutes to try to rid himself of his urges but that 'nothing worked'.

Unfortunately, Joerg P will probably spend only 15 years in jail, since that is the maximum sentence possible, though he will probably sent to a psychiatric hospital when he's done. He'll find out next month his fate, which seems pretty tame considering he raped so many women. One can only hope they keep him locked up in the psych ward for a very long time, since he will only be 61 in 15 years and still able to rape. The sad thing is, that the majority of sexual predators, re-offend once released even after therapy. It's a compulsion they never get rid of.

It's hard to believe that it took 22 years to finally catch the man.
