There is this story of two priests who were addicted to smoking and felt guilty about this. They decided to approach their Bishop for permission to continue to indulge in their addiction.

One of them summoned the courage to ask the Bishop.
‘Father , whenever I am tense I tend to pray. When I say prayers can I also smoke?’
‘Of course not’ came the stern admonition.
The priest returned despondent and conveyed the Bishop’s views to his colleague.
‘Brother that’s not the way you should pose our dilemma. Wait. I will present our case differently and get his permission’ said the other man, who then proceeded to meet the bishop.
‘Father when I am tense I smoke. When I am tense and smoke can I also say my prayers to the Lord?’
‘Of course you can’ said the beaming Bishop.
In my classes on decision making and problem solving my trainees enjoy discussion on the art of framing an issue in several ways with a view to getting better insights into any issue.
Take the recent incident involving Gautam Gambhir captain of Kolkatta Knight Riders[KKR] who led his team into a knockout stage for the first time in the IPL series. The controversy started when it was found that Gambhir was nursing a serious shoulder problem and played in the knockout match and thereafter decided not to lead the Indian national team to tour the Carribean. Many people criticized this Gambhir action .TV anchors Framed Gambhir’s action—of playing in the IPL despite injury and then skipping the Windies tour—as a case of choosing club over country. Some others said that for Gambhir ,money was far more important than duty to the nation. This debate is still going on but what struck me was the way commentators framed the issue –club vs country , Money vs patriotism . One former cricketer hinted that the issue was really of Delhi vs Mumbai.He had a point. It appears that Sachin did exactly the same thing a couple of seasons ago and nobody made an issue out of that.That apart Sachin and Dhoni have opted out of the Carribean tour since they needed rest . How come no one accusses them of being money minded or unpatriotic?
It was left to a lone commentator to frame the issue differently. He said that it was really a case of commitment and not money or patriotism . Thus Gambhir had committed to play at his best for KKR . That was why despite injury he carried on in an attempt to take his team to the finals. Once he realized that the damage was extensive and he could not play any more and he needed rest and treatment for over 6 weeks he opted out of the Windies tour. He was quite simply committed to doing his best every time he steps on to the ground for Club or country.
This is not the forum to write about which is the best frame on the Gambhir issue. Suffice it to say that how you frame an issue will determine your thought process.A creative person attempts to frame in multiple ways.
