Surely this is a new low in the Indian women esteem. On one hand anti reservationists are going ballistic over Women reservation Bill citing fears over the future of male in political arena but people in power are adamant to give some mileage to women and here we have this absolute stinker and this news comes from a place which is easily accessible from the seat of centralized power New Delhi.
In Saulana village Ghaziabad a 17 year old girl Pooja was raped by a 40 year old Narendra Kumar Singh her uncle. On 13th March Singh came to her house when Pooja was all alone, her parents had gone out. He locked her up in a room and raped her. The girl told her parents who naturally wanted to go to police but here the whole episode takes a weird twist. People from the village instead of siding with the parents just wanted to avoid the interference of police so they decided to take the matter to their Panchayat the village court. 25 to 30 people attended this court called by the village Pradhan Kuldeep Singh. After listening to the whole matter the Panchayat decided to punish the rapist because obviously he was guilty. But what was shocking was the punishment meted out to him-- He was slapped five times with a shoe and the matter was declared settled.
What was ironic was no one paid any heed to the pleas of the parents of the girl. The police came to know about the whole matter from the local media and took an appreciable step of registering a case of rape under section 376 against the accused on Tuesday who is absconding. The girl has been sent for a medical examination by them.
This news gives the real picture of state of poor women especially in small towns and villages. Imagine what such punishment would lead to if the police had not intervened. The rapist would have gone scot free and turned bold enough to commit more such acts not only that even other male members would be tempted to do so because what a five slaps if one is allowed to satisfy his lust in this manner.
The role of police is really applaudable in this case.
