Find decent method to hanging to death
Even as two high profile death sentences are pending in the country, one that of the infamous 26/11 Mumbai terror attack convict Ajmal Kasab and the other that of Indian Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru, the method of executing the death sentence is once again on focus. Whether to continue the old practice of hanging by neck to death or to find new methods like lethal injection is being debated both by the judges and the law makers in the country.

I am of the firm opinion that it is high time we put an end to the primitive method of hanging to death by the pull of a rope as it has become indecent and obsolete. It is an old practice and with the changing times, we should change that system, the thought of which is horrifying, leave alone watching it. We have seen several scenes of hanging to death in movies, especially the movies based on the independent struggle.
It was a colonial way of executing a death sentence to terrorise those who mustered courage to question their authority. I am of the view that the time has come the law makers of this country amend the Section 354(5) of the Code of Criminal Procedure that provides for the execution through hanging by neck till a condemned person is dead.
More decent methods should be found to suit the modern times. We should not forget that ours is the largest democracy in the world, and we should lead the world in providing a decent death even to a condemned person.
In a recent survey, even the judges who pronounce the death sentence have favoured a change of method. A majority of the judges have favoured alternative methods like lethal injection.
On issues like this, all the political parties and experts should come together to give even to the death sentence a semblance of decency.
