Felipe Calderon calls on the U.S. to stop weapons trafficking on the Border
Mexican President Felipe Calderon reiterated once again to the U.S. government the urgency of collapsing the networks of weapons smugglers which have become common along the common border.

Calderon claimed in an interview with Radio Caracol Bogota that violence in Mexico "greatly increased" since 2004, when U.S. authorities lifted the ban on sale of assault weapons.

"In these three years (which he has been in power) we have seized over 85,000 weapons including nearly 50,000 AK-47 and R-15 assault rifles, which we can say is enough firepower to arm one or more miltaries,"-President Calderon
Calderon added that during his term, which began in December 2006, Mexico has also confiscated "6,000 grenades, 10 million rounds of ammunition and even dozens of Barrett .50 caliber rifles, which are capable of penetrating any armor and have a massive firepower. "
Weapons are introduced from the United States by the shared border of nearly 3,000 miles with Mexico, said the president, for whom this war arsenal "is sold freely" on the boundary line.

"If they want (in the U.S.) to seal the border, let them seal the border from weapons, because it is prohibited to export to countries where their use is forbidden," Calderón suggested.
The walls or barriers (regarding immigration and sealing the border) simply alienate the people, he said, noting that "they are useless in solving the fundamental problem and serve only in generating a tension which no one wants to lead."
The migration, he said, is "due to economic and social phenomena that can not be stopped by decree."
"What we have to do is to find mechanisms to regulate the flow for the benefit of both countries, protecting the interests of the people," said the Mexican president.
