Teams of law enforcement officers are destroying a stockpile of weapons seized in a probe of a ragtag Alabama militia.
Six members of the so-called “Alabama Free Militia” pleaded guilty to federal charges in the case. Authorities said the group stockpiled 130 homemade hand grenades and about 70 grenades rigged to be fired from a rifle.
Officers began destroying the weapons Thursday at a site near the Talladega Superspeedway. Agents say the destruction process could take two days.
Some of the men have said they were arming themselves because they feared terrorism, a failing economy and the possibility of martial law being imposed in the United States.
