A judge says a new Florida law requiring travel agents who book trips to Cuba to post a $250,000 state bond cannot be enforced, for now.
U.S. District Judge Alan S. Gold issued a preliminary injunction against the law on Wednesday.
He says the law, which took effect July 1, may violate a constitutional mandate that makes the federal government responsible for U.S. foreign policy _ not the states.
Florida’s law was backed by Cuban-American legislators, who want to severely curtail travel to the communist island. Under the law, travel agencies would have to post the state bond in addition to an existing federal bond totaling $25,000.
The injunction will remain in effect until a trial can be held on the law’s constitutionality.
