Fatal Landslides Return to Haunt Uganda
Landslides return in big numbers all over the country to haunt Ugandans. This time around, devasting landslides have been reported in Tororo, mbale, Sironko in the east and Kabale in western Uganda. Eight people have been declared dead with a majority 1,500 people left homeless.

Many more people are continually running away from their homes as the torrential rains continue falling around the country. Uganda being a hilly country, the capital city - Kampala is also not spared. Often, after heavy rains, flooding in different parts of the city renders transport difficult. In situations like these, street youth eager to make a quick buck, charge from UGX 500 to UGX 5,000 for a shoulder lift across a flooded street.
With these heavy rains, the risk of contracting water borne diseases like cholera, typhoid, diarrhoea, dysentry becomes more likely everyday. The Uganda Red Cross has confirmed an outbreak in Tororo. For people running away from the landslides in the mountainous areas of Mount Elgon, the danger of contracting these fatal diseases is another avoidable catastrophe. Unless the government accepts to relocate and cater for the displaced people, landslides will always remain a national tradegy waiting to happen.
