Eunuchs Should Recover Loans, Says the Supreme Court
The Supreme Court of Pakistan has suggested on Wednesday December 23, 2009 that Eunuchs be employed to recover outstanding loans. The suggestion was made by a three-member bench of the Supreme Court, including Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Mohamamd Chaudhry, in Islamabad as they heard a petition highlighting the anguish of eunuchs in the country.

The petition was filed by the Insaaf Welfare Trust and it pointed the denial of fundamental human rights to eunuchs in the country including the right of inheritance. The petition received positive attention by the bench. The court agreed that eunuchs were as much citizens of Pakistan as citizens of other genders and hating or persecuting them was not allowed. They had the right of inheritance in the property of their parents. Employing them in government and social welfare departments for recovering loans would be helpful in boosting up this neglected segment of the society.
The court gave the example of India where eunuchs were employed for recovering loans and they did their job with striking success. Today, a significant number of eunuchs are serving as successful tax collectors in India. Following the same example, eunuchs in Pakistan can be put to useful service. The court has directed the country’s district coordination officers (DCOs) to trace the families of registered eunuchs across the country to make sure the eunuchs get their right of inheritance in property.
