The European Union says it will give Haiti $4.6 million to help pay for food in the world’s poorest country.
High food prices led to deadly protests in April and forced the resignation of the Caribbean nation’s prime minister.
The EU said Tuesday that the money would help to stabilize the country by providing food, health care, clean water and proper hygiene to some 1.5 million people. It will focus efforts on women and children in rural areas and small farmers badly affected by recent storms.
The U.N. food agency says one in five Haitian children is chronically undernourished.
