Mugabe has nothing nice to say about the Europeans, but gladly takes 2 billion US dollars worth of aid from them…?
How can this even be considered?
Every day we see and hear reports complaining about the treatment of citizens in Syria and Libya - and we see and hear reports of the Western allies taking on these governments, but Mugabe, who has been killing his own people for the best part of 45 years is given aid of US$ 2 billion in the last 9 years?
“The European Union has provided US$2 billion worth of aid to Zimbabwe since 2002, a top EU diplomat has said.
The EU, which maintains sanctions against President Robert Mugabe and his inner circle over charges of human rights abuses and electoral fraud, remains one of the country’s largest donors.
Aldo Dell Ariccia, head of the EU delegation to Zimbabwe, said at the EU Day on Tuesday the bloc had given more than US$2billion to the southern African country since 2002. “In Zimbabwe, since the year 2002, EU development assistance has been of approximately 1.5 billion Euro or US$2 billion and it has been devoted to the health sector, to education, to food security and agriculture, to water and sanitation, to humanitarian programmes, to governance, to trade and last but not last, to arts,” he said.
The EU had also supported the recently-ended Harare International Festival of the Arts (HIFA) Mugabe and long-term rival Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai formed a power-sharing government two years ago to try to end a political and economic crisis, largely blamed on Mugabe’s drive to seize land from whites to resettle landless blacks.Mugabe regularly blames the EU for the country’s economic collapse, which he blames on targeted sanctions mainly targeting his cronies.“
Consider this - US$ 2 billion should go a very long way to fix the problems in Zimbabwe - largely caused by the mismanagement of the country by ZANU PF, but do we see any improvement in the sectors that this aid is supposedly helping?
No!
Based upon the premise that 1 billion is one thousand million, and that the last nine years constitute 3285 days (and I haven’t included leap years), that means that the aid given to Zimbabwe over the last nine years calculates at in excess US$ 600000 per day!
By further extending the calculation, I have come to the conclusion that the European Union has given Mugabe about US$7 per second continuously since 2002.
I would love to see a full financial report on where this money has gone…
