Immigrants try to climb over it, narcos tunnel under it, but nobody has ever tried lobbing off chunks of it to sell as scrap, until now.
On August 24, 2009, just over a mile west of the San Ysidro port of entry, in an area where both drug and human smuggling are common, U.S. the border patrol was alerted of a group, on the Mexican side, tampering with the border fence.
As border patrol agents went to take a closer look, they were caught in an onslaught of rocks from beyond the Mexican border. The Mexican police were called, and the American agents retreated.
On Tuesday, August 25, U.S. agents were once again called with a report that a group of Mexicans were seen in the same area, attempting to dismantle the fence. After once again being ambushed by rocks from the other side , Mexican authorities were called to the scene.
Upon arriving, Tijuana authorities found a group of six men using soldering tools to carve off pieces of the fence, which they later confessed, to sell as scrap metal. Unfortunatly, the six Mexican Einsteins had no idea they were actually re-scrapping the precious metal, as that portion of the fence was made by recycled U.S. steel landing mats from the Vietnam War era.
After placing the the six subjects under arrest and taking them into custody, Tijuana authorities phoned the U.S. border patrol to put their minds at ease and assure them the dismantlement was in no way in efforts to allow of stampede of La Raza supporting Mexicans bust through in hopes of reconquering California. It was just a group of pobres pendejos looking to make a little extra dinero.
