Since the bloody militancy began in Jammu & Kashmir in the late 1980s for independence from India, nearly 100,000 people have been killed in Kashmir alone. Protests have started again following the Amarnath Shrine land row where Muslims in the valley have renewed their demand for independence from India. Booker winner and prominent Indian writer/activist Arundhati Roy remarked that India needs independence from Kashmir as much as Kashmir needs independence from India.
