DhaulaKuan Rape was Unacceptable But...

POLITICS. .

Naturally the news of a 30 year old BPO employee being gang-raped in a moving vehicle was shocking as well as deplorable.I can only pay lip service saying that Delhi is not safe,Poor Girl and what not.Only she alone has to face the trauma all her life.

At the same time when the news came about she being from North-east my mind immediately recalled some images which I saw recently. There was a long queue in front of the bank Counter with persons from all walks of life awaitng their turn. There were mostly migrants from lower middle class, some educated some not, talking in their own language, suddenly there was a hush, all the chattering stopped.each and every neck turned on the right side, even I did the same and immediately saw the reason, not one not two but five reasons.

There they were, five girls from the North-east their faces having typical distinctive features. But that was not the reason for the undivided attention. All the girls were dressed in small shorts and sphagatti tops quite low in front, the armholes barely covering their assets walking coolly to take their place in the queue.

Than I glanced at the males, there was not a single one who had not given a more than crusory glance, some were staring openly at the leg show while teenagers were giggling slyly passing lewd comments, while the girls were behaving as if they were totally unconcerned about this.

The first thing which came to my mind was Delhi is not not ready for this, while their dressing style might be acceptable in their hometown they just cannot expect persons coming from states where even today women are expected to cover their faces when going out and girls after reaching puberty are seggregated from boys with whom they might have played in their childhood.

Where majority of males are still hesitant to be seen in the company of females barring few metros and other progressive cities one cannot be surprised if few lechers and lout are unable to handle such openness and thier frustrations result in tragic incident like gang rape.

Won't it be safer all round if dressing up is toned down in public places at least after all someone has rightly said: "In Rome do as Romans do."
