What kind of discipline is imposed on the U.S. military, they do not leave a single stone unturned with their malicious and iniquitous deeds, first we witnessed their nasty actions in Iraq and now we see their unrelenting stream of horrid events in Okinawa.
Recent proposal by the Okinawa Prefectural Assembly has demanded in the reduction of U.S. military on the island as they have become harbingers of exploitation especially for the girls and women in the region. Incessant rapes have made life of the fairer gender next to miserable in the island.
The US troops amounting to nearly 20,000 that are based on the southern Japanese island alone have amounted to tense relations and reason being same in here too, prosecutions of the military personnel for committing crimes against the locals.
Although the authorities are making plans to deliver the proposal to the high officials of the Sates but time would only tell how far justice would bestow upon the people of the island.
In one such incident, the culprit - a U.S. Marine - admitted that he kissed and pressed himself against the victim but rebuffed sexually molesting the 14 year old girl.
Lt. Gen. Bruce Wright, commander of U.S. forces in Japan, said, “This kind of act by one of our military members, a Marine staff sergeant, is absolutely unacceptable and in no way matches the commitment of our entire U.S. Forces Japan community to the highest possible moral and professional standards”.
Although similar incidents have occurred in the northern parts of the island too but after the Japanese authorities dropped charges against four such offenders’ anger aggravated among people of the island and finally it resulted in the Anti-U.S. military outrage in Okinawa. Looking at the present scenario, the U.S. military chief in Japan ordered for curfews and other such restrictions in the place so as to bring the populace at ease.
Not only crime, the troops are also being responsible for pollution and noise levels associated with their bases making life hell for the masses.
Though not sure how far the project will be successful but authorities in Japan are planning to set up security cameras near U.S. bases in Okinawa since the privacy issues of the localites would then come under consideration.
But whatever the policy they frame, one thing is sure we want a peaceful environment free from any trepidation or interference not the curfews!
