CPI (M): Army without a General after Anil Biswas

. .

CPI (M) leader Anil Biswas, a member of party's politburo and CPI (M)'s West Bengal state committee secretary, was admitted to a city nursing home and underwent two surgeries for removal of blood clots in the brain and after remaining in coma died on Sunday. He was 62 and is survived by his wife and lone daughter.

Biswas was at the rudder after former state secretary Sailen Dasgupta's death in 2001. Consequently, he was made an important member in the party's highest policy-making body, the Politburo and the central committee along with the Chief Minister, Mr. Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, and Mr. Biman Bose.

The sudden demise of Anil Biswas, the chief strategist of the CPI-M and Left Front in the run-up to the state Assembly election has given a big setback to the party especially when the first phase of elections is just 20 days away.

A disciplinarian, Biswas earned admiration from party men for his sense of responsibility towards colleagues. He never became a mass leader himself but will be remembered as the brain that helped the party wade through all types of crisis and retain its control over the masses.

The top leaders will have to meet to take stock of the situation which has arised after Biswas's death - his post very soon will has to be filled by the party and till then Left Front chairman Biman Bose and Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee will share the work. But the basic concern among the party is of what will be our next agenda or after Biswas what next step has to be taken.

Bearing in mind the situation I think Left Front leaders are clearly perturbed over the adverse impact of Biswas's absence in the presence of pressure by both the Election Commission and the Opposition, counting Maoists as well.
