It has been heartening to see the media reports that there is focus shift in the policy hitherto followed by the Indian National Congress in their UPA-II term with respect caste based reservation to religion based reservations. This focus shift could be seen in the Reservation Bill for Women. This is the net result of the think tank of Congress since leadership is of the opinion that the Youth and Women will become major force to reckon with in future in electorate politics. This also would take care of any un-similarities that had cropped in for Muslims, Christians, Sikhs etc.
Basically, economic backwardness should be the criterion; if at all any reservations are to be extended. But then this data is not available to take any final call right now.
This also means that the Congress is hell bent to take head on with lobby of backward classes since it has been realized that the actual beneficiary are a few core castes. All other castes and sub castes are still not getting benefits of the reservation policy followed after the acceptance of Mandal Commission by VPSingh Govt. This means setback to three Yadav leaders namely M/s Mulayam, Sharad and Lallu. This being the main reason that these three leaders are hell-bent to create problems in the safe passage of the Reservation Bill for women when it comes up in the Lok Sabha. Every one knows in this country that it was at the behest of Mr. V.P.Singh that the Mandal Commission report was accepted and no one wants give credence to him. All the credit has gone to the leaders like Mulayam, Sharad and Lallu who used this trump card and became force to reckon with in Indian politics. Today, no one remembers Mr.V.P.Singh as hero of so-called OBCs. I think time has come now that the credentials of MS, Sharad, Lallu etc. are subject to critical scrutiny whether particular caste amongst the OBCs took advantage and others are still marginalized.
In times to come, the social engineering started with lot of fanfare by the Bahujan Samaj Party would also see and experience jolt if the line of thinking of Congress proves to be right. The love and affection shown by dalits towards leaders of Congress have won all-round appreciation. This is un-nerving the BSP supremo and as she sees potential danger before her. Dalits have also realized that few handful people and castes only have been benefited of this reservation for SC/STs. These beneficiaries have become a class and now are behaving like untouchables to lower rung of the other SCs belonging to this privileged class. The slogan of “Sarvjan Hityay-Sarvjan Sukhay” will prove a mere slogan in times to come as BSP is serving its core voters and using others.
I think that this would become in times to come the talking point for over all review of the provisions in the Indian Constitution allowing reservations for SC/STs both in term of electorate institutions and jobs. I think now time has come to take a final call and see that only deserving people go up the ladder irrespective of their color, creed and caste, the basic tenets of the Constitution and take charge of the situation to lead this nation. If caste politics dominate the scene then the privileges granted to SC/Sts would never be withdrawn since almost at 25-33% MP and MLAs get elected to the legislative houses.
I would also submit to the Indian National Congress to work out that the black money circulation is checked and corrupt practices come to an end. Let there be white paper published by the Govt. and that should become a subject of national debate.
