China: Qinghai Earthquake 2010
An earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale has struck Yushu County, Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Qinghai Province at 7:45am today. According to the initial estimation from the local government, the earthquake has caused more than 400 death and 10,000 injured. Yushu County and its neighboring areas have been affected severely, where 90 percent of the houses in the hard-hit region collapsed, causing numerous people homeless. Since the temperature of the affected area will be about 0℃ at night in the coming days, provision of emergency shelters for the victims remains a high priority.


Hong Kong Red Cross Actions
In response to this severe earthquake, a sum of HK$200,000 was mobilized to support the relief operation by provision of relief materials like tents, cotton quilts, cotton clothes or food for the affected people to overcome their pressing needs and to sustain the cold spell at night.

After the earthquake, the Headquarters of the Red Cross Society of China (RCSC) has immediate launched the second level of emergency response and dispatched relief assistance of worth RMB 1.1 million, including 500 tents, 1,000 quilts, 1,000 cotton clothes, as well as RMB100,000 relief fund, for the relief purpose. Meanwhile, the RCSC has deployed an assessment team to the affected area for initial assessment, with rescue team standby for any necessary emergency relief.

The Hong Kong Red Cross is closely monitoring the latest situation and maintaining close communication with the RCSC staff in Qinghai. Future action plans will be derived based on future assessments.
