Chile’s Rainbow Building
Green building is the practice of creating structures and using processes that are environmentally responsible and resource-efficient throughout a building's life-cycle: from siting to design, construction, operation, maintenance, renovation, and demolition. There are a number of motives to building green, including environmental, economic, and social benefits. However, modern sustainability initiatives call for an integrated and synergistic design to both new construction and in the retrofitting of an existing structure.

Keeping this concept of green buildings in mind, designers Murtinho + Raby Arquitectos transformed an old grey 70s building into a vibrant new space, and by the looks of the finished product, they succeeded. The General Offices of Caja de Compensacion Los Heroes, a building made in the 70’s, located in is located in Calle Holanda Nº64, Providencia, Santiago, Chile is an independent, non-profit institution that manages security funds for economic help to retired persons and workmen by offering small loans to them. The building is mainly being designed to benefit the senior citizens and also to built upon a nature-leisure concept.

The total floor area is around 5000sq.m (54,000sq.ft). The rainbow façade, created from brightly coloured panels, also doubles as a UV filter for the non-profit organization’s building. The use of coloured panels to line the sides of the building accomplishes that goal in a way that required much less materials and energy than tearing down the existing structure or erecting a new one.

The building strategy is to efficiently collect energy with a sustainable facade. This double facade skin is an UV ray filter and a good component to isolate the interior space comfort. The colourful panels of the wall will not only highlight this concept but will also trap solar energy using UV ray filters that protect the interior part of the building from getting heated. Also, the symmetrical layout of the interior gives a proper balance to all the floors within.
