Celibacy: What's its significance in serving God?

Opposition to ending the requirement of celibacy for Catholic priests is strong but isn't it strange that, despite this requirement, there are so many married Catholic priests who seem to be doing as good a job as unmarried priests? If celibacy is so vital, why do married Catholic priests exist at all? This isn't something that the Roman Catholic Church is anxious to advertise. For instance here in Kenya we have known of priests who secretly get married and get kids but they still pretend to be following the rule of celibacy.

The debate over whether catholic priests should be allowed to marry is gaining some shape in Kenya following a recent ordination of a “married priest”to a bishop. This could be one of the many who have been going against the rule secretly, but this is an issue worth some hot debate.

I bet not many would take this as shocking news since it is widely known that priests have been secretly seeing women and those with enough guts also indulge in sexual escapades with the more than willing nuns. Recently a priest was forced to abandon his pulpit job by the congregation after impregnating a nun who was also of course expelled from her respective convent. The two decided to marry and lived happily ever after.

Since the recent incident that elicited some debate from all divides, the Catholic church is trying to clean its garb as usual but if for sure every priest were to be honest, any disciplinary measure that the church would take could go down with many not forgetting the ones who have perfected the act of imbibing the so called the 'devils drink' and have qualified and earned themselves the infamous title – drunkards. But the pope's representative in Kenya, Archbishop Paul Lebeaupin has made it clear that the Vatican will not change the rule of celibacy for the Catholic priests.
