A judge sentenced a Canadian man to three years in prison Friday on child pornography charges involving more than 60 victims in Canada and England in what police called one of the largest child porn cases ever prosecuted in Canada.
Police accused Marc Bedford of talking young females _ some as young as 9 _ into exposing themselves over an Internet webcam, and then threatening them with rape, bodily harm and death if they did not cooperate.
Bedford, 23, pleaded guilty in January.
Judge Judy Beaman accepted a joint recommendation from the prosecution and defense that he receive a three-year sentence. She also banned Bedford for life from communicating with children under age 14 online and said he must register as a sex offender for 20 years.
The prosecution said Bedford’s crimes affected more than 60 confirmed victims and they believe there are hundreds more. Dozens of victims were identified in court.
The alleged victims live in the Canadian cities of Edmonton, Sault Ste. Marie, Kingston, Ottawa and in the Kent region of southeastern England.
Bedford used Internet and social networking Web sites to find and target girls in 2005 and 2006.
Police allege he operated under the screen names Marco1812000 and Supalover666 and would hack into his victims’ e-mail accounts to gain access to their contact lists.
