Canada's Wanted Criminals Take Flight

Canada’s system of law and punishment has always had its problems that have existed because of the provincial set up of our Confederation. Criminals who have committed crimes in one part of the country could always choose to commit their crimes knowing that if they were smart they could often hide from the law by moving to another Canadian province. This is about to end, at least that’s what Canada’s law enforcement agencies hope.

Criminals presently wanted on provincial warrants be warned you can no longer hide from accountability for your choices. Now if you are in British Columbia and you have an outstanding warrant from another province that is enforceable, the police are now going to be acting on them and they will be dropping by to hold you accountable.

Three wanted criminals living in Prince George found this out recently as they received a free trip to jail, courtesy of Canada’s new warrant enforcement program. Paige Van Bree, 46, Gordon Thomas Labiberte, and Ricky Dale Lozinski on Thursday were each arrested on outstanding warrants and flown back to Calgary, Alberta to face the music.

The new program was developed in Vancouver, B.C. and has been given the name “Con Air” by many, it uses pre-existing police powers to locate and bring to justice criminals wanted on provincials warrants in other jurisdictions and then flies them back to the jurisdiction in which they are wanted to face their crimes.

A program that has been needed for along time and it will bring some peace of mind to people in many parts of Canada, worried about the possibility that there are violent criminals hiding among them, percolating but always close to boil. We in Prince George will sleep better tonight knowing that these three gentlemen are not walking the streets of our little city, maybe looking for another opportunity, or even close to boil, and considering their previous history, this is probably a good thing for society as a whole.
