Bush: Pro-choice & Pro-Gay Marriage
Laura Bush - like most southerners and Texans of her time - was raised in a Democratic household. But when she met and married George W. Bush she had to change party affiliation.
She was then not just marrying into a Republican family, but one of the most established Republican families in the country and - at least for appearances' sake - she had to become a Republican.
And she did. But she remained at heart a liberal. Laura Bush never uttered a political opinion during her husband's tenure. She was always the image of the quite, loyal wife. Unlike, say, Hillary Clinton who was quite active in her husband's presidency, Laura Bush played a marginal role.
But now she has a new memoir where she writes her life story (George Bush's presidential memoir will be released later this fall and will be based on 10 key decisions he took as president. Bush summed up his presidency often by stating that he is the "Decider").
Laura's memoir is light on politics, but in a recent interview with CNN's Larry King, the former First Lady stated her beliefs on abortion and gay marriage. And to much surprise they differ with Republican-conservative orthodoxy and with the stated beliefs of her president.
Bush, of course, ran on being pro-life and wanting to prohibit abortion through a constitutional "right-to-life" amendment and he also rallied her base in 2004 on the fear of gay marriage and proposed a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage as well.
His wife differs:
This may be why Bush only offered lip service to these causes. His wife may have restrained him or like her Bush may have never cared about them at all and was just playing cynical politics with his socially conservative base in order to win an election, but then never giving back to them what they voted him in for. If so, these Christians should learn that politics is a mean, manipulative and dishonest bitch!
