Brazil Recognizes Palestine

Prior to the lousy Oslo fake peace accords imposed on the Palestinians by the United States and its client Arab regimes and accepted by the incompetent and obsequious Yasser Arafat, more nations recognized the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) than recognized the occupying state of Israel. Think about it.

And in the 1970s the overwhelming majority of nations voted to condemn Zionist as racism. And quite rightly. But then the Palestinian leadership in Tunis, contrary to the proscribed advice of thoughtful Palestinian advisers, decided to recognize the state of Israel and give up the idea of a liberated Palestine and instead seek a two-state solution with a encumbered Palestinian state in the 1967 Occupied Territories (West Bank and Gaza Strip) or 22% of occupied historic Palestine. Israel never returned the favor. The Israeli government pocketed a Palestinian recognize of Israel without ever agreeing to recognize a Palestinian state in return. Israel's statement was always some sort of autonomous arrangement for the Palestinians but never actual statehood. Rabin never envisioned a sovereign Palestinian state but a federation of Palestinian independent zones lousy defined as a nation. And this was supposed to be the big Israeli peace guy!

The Israeli right-wing still opposes a Palestinian state and the current Likud government has the temerity to use Palestinian refusal to recognize Israel as a Jewish state when Likud recognizes to recognize even the idea of a Palestinian nation-state let alone any question about its character. At least the Palestinians recognize "Israel" and have stated that its definition is not for them to worry about, but for Israelis to self-define. For the record, this "Jewish state" business is a mere delay tactic to avoid serious peace talks and Israel has never before made this silly demand as a precondition to peace talks.

As the league currently stands, Israel benefited from the mere appearance that it was committed to genuine peace all the while it has further dragged the region to war and continues to deny millions of Palestinians even basic human rights let alone national self-determination.

And the corrupt leadership of the PLO deserves a lot of the blame. When the PLO recognized Israel it was a green light for others to give into American pressure and recognize Israel as well. After all if the Palestinian leadership has accepted Israel and Israel is ostensibly being a peace partner, why not reward it with the recognition it graves?

Israel recognition around the world went from dozens to over a hundred. Exactly what Zionism has sought. But Israel did not deserves such an reward consider the end result of Oslo and the continuing injustices against the Palestinians.

If Israel has refused to adopt peace then why should the recognition conditioned on that premise not be rescinded? It should and very well ought.

That's why Brazil's recent decision to recognize Palestine is so monumental:

Brazil today recognized the state of Palestine based on borders before Israel seized control of the West Bank in 1967.

The foreign ministry said the recognition was in response to a request made by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva earlier this year.

The decision is in line with Brazil’s historic support for United Nations resolutions demanding the end of Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories, and doesn’t detract from the country’s support for peace negotiations between the two sides, the ministry said in a statement.

This is a significant to isolating Israel. If more and more nations recognize Palestine and Israel still refuses to, then nations who recognized Israel only in the last 20 years or so should cease diplomatic relations with Israel until the Zionist state accepts an entirely sovereign Palestinian state.

Unless Israel adopts peace it should face further isolation and a return to its previous status as a lackey with few relations. Israel thinks it can pocket a peace dividend without the actual peace.

History will humble this arrogance.
