Brahmins past present and future

The article that I read recently prompted me to write this blog.The brahmins of yore were highly orthodox scholarly and always class conscious with te result that they were looked upon as though they were the liaison between the god and the public.This image of looking at a brahmin with awe had made him very important. I know stories of non brahmins jumping into a river to give way to a namboothiri (kerala brahmin) and many ladies of yore in caste ridden Kerala had a feeling that cohabitation with a namboothiri would bring forth intelligent children.The kings assembly consisted mostly brahmins and they were actually running the country.Also almost all the teachers of English were brahmins and they proud of the fact that they knew good English

At presenrt brahmins are in a pitiable state.Just because thay belong to the forward caste all the reservations are denied to them.Many brahmins of today are economically weak and find it difficult to make both ends meet.They can beg but the prestige will not allow them to do so.Many brahmins go in as temple priests or as cooks.Another factor that contributed to their decline is their cowardice and desire for a safe life.This attitude makes tham take no risks and get happiness with what they get.They are not fighters with the result that they give up very easily.

The brahmins of tomorrow would be there only in name.They would have all the vices like smoking,drinking and what not.They may be be ashamed to call themselves brahmins and they they are generally used and thrown like curry leaves.

The real brahmins have become a vanishing species and an agency like 'white cross' should come out to prote the species.Now brahmins are found only in agraharams which have shrunk very much If the brahmins are not protected a day is not far off when we can listen to harikatha kalashebs,sloka recitation only in cds
